Seattle's Ballard neighborhood was a city in its own right in 1890, enjoying the title of “Shingle Capital of the World” for its output of timber shingles and millwork. Annexed to Seattle in 1906, Ballard has nevertheless retained a distinctive culture. Fishing and boat-building industries attracted a wave of Scandinavian immigrants between 1880 and 1920, the culture and influence of which is still retained today.

Ballard enjoys a vibrant, exciting commercial and historic district. Market Street’s unique shops, restaurants, music venues, and historic Majestic Bay Theater are only a few of Ballard’s many attractions. Ballard’s popularity as a place to live has fueled a real-estate boom. Single family homes in Ballard neighborhoods such as Sunset Hill, Crown Hill, North Beach, and Loyal Heights are among the most sought-after in the city. Density is occurring in Ballard’s downtown core, with many new condo-retail projects in the works.

Whether you’re enjoying sailboat races at Shilshole, strolling on the beach at Golden Gardens Park, watching boats go through the locks, or sipping a sunset drink on the deck at Ray’s Boathouse, you’re never far from the water in Ballard.
